A Guide to Treating Your Dog Without Adding to Their Waistline!

As owners, it’s always hard not to give too many treats, but did you know that treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily intake of calories. There are lots of options available that are low in fat and calories that means you can help manage your dog’s weight whilst still rewarding good behaviour.

The best low-calorie treats are high in protein and under 10% fat.

Dogs on a weight management plan, dogs with pancreatitis and those who are training and need extra rewards could all benefit from lower calorie treats.

Pancreatitis is a condition where the pancreas becomes inflamed, often triggered or worsened by high-fat foods and treats. Dogs who have had pancreatitis need treats that are consistently under 10% fat, and ideally much lower.

Some of our all-natural Anco treats are a great low-calorie option.

Great Treat Options Under 10% Fat:

When training your puppy or dog, constantly rewarding them with treats is an easy way to accidently over-feed your dog. If lower fat treats are used for training, you can feed treats more freely, knowing that you are not using too much of your dog’s daily calorie intake. The best training treats are ones that your dog really enjoys and are small enough to give your dog just a little taste. Anco Nibbles are the perfect training treat! They are small, semi moist and low calorie. They come in a variety of flavours such as Chicken, Salmon and Lamb.

According to the PDSA Animal Wellbeing Report, an estimated 51% of dogs in the UK are overweight or obese.

If you are looking for a longer lasting treat that will keep your dog busy, then options like the Ostrich Collagen Roll, Crunchy Collagen Bone and Meaty Buffalo Ear are all great choices.
